If you’re looking to print a design with lots of colours, or just require a small number of products; Direct to Garment printing, otherwise known as DTG, is likely to be the most economical process for you.

DTG printing explained

What is DTG printing?

Direct to Garment printing is a relatively new technology that makes it possible for us to print T-shirts and other clothing products with an unlimited amount of colours and designs.

Despite being fairly new, high specification DTG machines are able to produce print work that’s on par with (or better than) traditional screen printing.

With no minimum order and a lot of flexibility, this is ideal for those with highly detailed design work (like photographs), or those requiring small order volumes.

How does DTG printing work

All direct to garment printers are descendants of the desktop inkjet printer and work in a very similar way. However, they are much larger and print directly onto the garments.

The ink is embedded into the fabrics, providing a finish that is typically softer than other print methods, and that cannot crack or peel off.

This is ideal for small runs and has a fast turnaround time with no setup costs.

DTG printing feel

You can expect a soft to touch finish with DTG printing, as the water-based inks sit within the fabric rather than on top of it. This ensures increased durability, making DTG ideal for merchandise and retail products.

When printing onto dark colours with DTG, a base coat is required. For this reason, the print may feel slightly raised when compared to an identical print on a white garment.

If you have a design with just a few colours and need over 50 prints of that same design, it may be more economical to use screen printing. But don’t worry, if you’re not sure which is best, our expert team will be able to help guide you to the best process for your order.

How much does it cost to DTG? Is it expensive?

If you’re ordering less than 100 items, DTG is likely the most economical print method you can choose. With prices coming in much lower than traditional print methods like screen printing and quality to match, DTG is often the best choice.

The price for a DTG printed T-shirt can be as low as £5.20, with all production undertaken here in our UK DTG printing facilities.
